What's the best bitcoin bookmaker for AFL and other Australian sports?

I get the impression that most of the btc sportsbooks have a strong focus on U.S. sports because that's where most of the underserved are. Has anyone had good experiences betting on Aussie Rules or NRL rugby games at bitcoin betting sites?

Bovada only accepts US sports bettors so you can rule them out. Surprisingly Nitrogen Sports is actually pretty poor for Australian Rules. I guess they are more focused on the U.S. market. If you want to bet bitcoin on the AFL I think CloudBet might be your best option...
    • Lines are offered on every AFL game for the entire week ahead.
    • Option to bet on the AFL PremierShip Grand Final Winner.
    • Both Single and Straight AFL bets are available.
    • CloudBet accept players from anywhere in Australia.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) have been cracking down on Australian bookies who have been using a "Click To Call" feature in their apps that allows users to place bets over the phone using voice recognition. While some bookmakers like William Hill and Bet365 have withdrawn the feature from their apps, SportsBet have stuck to their guns and left the in-play betting feature in their iPhone and Android apps. Things appear to have escalated and the ACMA have now reported the matter to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

Basically, if you are Australian and you want to place a bet on a live AFL game or tennis match, then you will have to use a BTC sportsbook.

Gambling is considered to be a big problem in Australia. It's estimated that up to 1% of Aussies have significant gambling problems. I'm not sure how that compares to other countries but it seems pretty high.

No. I don't think the AFL is a big enough betting market for them. Live in-play betting is available mainly for NFL football, English Premier League soccer, NBA basketball and few other major US and European betting markets. As the bitcoin sports betting industry matures and liquidity increases, I'm sure Aussie Rules betting will be available in-play. At the moment Australian bookmakers like SportsBets offer in-play betting so there's not a big enough demand yet.

What if you want to gamble on sports less popular than Aussie Rules? Which bitcoin bookie offers the best lines on Australian cricket, rugby, athletics, soccer etc?

It's only a matter of time before SportsBet and William Hill Australia start accepting bitcoin.

I wouldn't be so sure. The Malcolm Turnbull government recently banned online poker and in-play betting in Australia. Bitcoin integration might be seen as a way for minors to gamble so their gaming commission might not allow it for now.

I think they must be taking a stand. Tim Heath has blocked Australian punters from sportsbet.io, I guess that's because he has to come home for Christmas to see the family.....

Thankfully it is pretty easy to circumvent these kind of blocks by using a VPN. There are even free VPN services like Hola.org if you don't want to pay.

Regular fiat currency sportsbooks and poker rooms simply won't accept deposits from Australian banks or credit cards so a VPN won't help you.

I agree I was only commenting on the only Australian owned crypto sportsbook and how he has locked it from the Aussie geo.

Nitrogen Sports is available in Australia. As far as we are aware the United Kingdom is the only country that Nitrogen fully blocks.

Haven't all the poker rooms left Australia also? Is Nitrogen Sports the only poker room available to Australian poker players?

A couple of months ago CloudBet live streamed the Australian Tennis Open, a first for a crypto-only sportsbook, and they will be live streaming more sports from Australia and around the globe so if you like to bet-and-watch then CloudBet might be a good option for Aussies.

I thought cloudbet restricted players from Australia? Or was it the UK, I can't remember.

CloudBet no longer accepts sports bettors from the United Kingdom but they do welcome punters from Australia. Full details can be found on our CloudBet page https://www.bitcoingambling.io/cloudbet-sports.html
