We reported a couple of months ago that fake bitcoin wallets had begun to appear in the Apple App Store. Any iPhone users who downloaded these native apps had their bitcoin stolen. While these scam wallets have now been removed from iTunes, con artists have begun to advertise a fake btc web wallet called bestwalletbtc.com using the Google Adwords network.

According to a post on reddit, if you do a Google search for popular keywords like "best bitcoin wallets", the first ad that appears is for a scam wallet. If you sign-up and send your bitcoin to the deposit address then it's gone forever. So far this fake address has robbed over 8 BTC from unsuspecting users.

Both Apple and Google need to do a better job at rejecting scam wallets from Google Play, Adwords and the iTunes App Store. If someone gets scammed the first time they use bitcoin, they are unlikely to give it a second try.

Another fake bitcoin wallet was advertised by Google Adwords this week that was a replica of Blockchain.info. Google removed it promptly after it was reported but I still think this is not good enough. Google should be provided with a list of legit bitcoin wallets. Anytime they are asked to advertise a wallet that is not on the approved list, they should ask some questions first before they publish the advert.

there also seems to be a lot of disagreement between wallets on what happens in the event of a bitcoin hardfork. breadwallet and mycelium say they will follow the most hashing power, while greenaddress and samurai wallet say they will follow the original chain.
