Beware of fake bitcoin wallets in the Apple iTunes App Store

    iPhone and iPad users need to be aware that there are a number of fake bitcoin wallets in the App Store on iTunes that look exactly like the original wallets. These wallets include GreenAddress, BreadWallet, Armory, Blockchain and Bitcoin Core Wallets. Here are links to the wallets we know about so far but there may be more....

    WOW. I thought Apple carefully vetted every new app but I guess not. This really puts me off every using a mobile wallet again.

    Mobile wallets like Mycelium are fine as hot wallets. Use a hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger for the bulk of your bitcoin savings.

    the bitcoin address linked to the fake wallet had over $20,000 dollars in it before apple removed it. please be careful folks!

    once you have downloaded a bitcoin wallet to your phone, is their any way you can certify that you have downloaded the real deal?

    More scam wallets are appearing in the Apple App Store. Avoid wallets called AlphaWallet and Ocean Wallet or your bitcoin will be stolen. Full details here

    It looks like Google haven't tightened up their "Ad Words" approval process when it comes to bitcoin wallets. A reddit users is reporting that there is a fake ad for a blockchain.info wallet when you search for the keyword blockchain.

    It seems more scam bitcoin wallets have been added to the Apple iTunes App Store. In total this Reddit poster has found 4 fake btc wallets. The amazing thing is they don't even link to a proper developer website so Apple should have been able to easily spot the fakery.

    Hardware wallest only cost about $70 dollars now and they're the size of a key ring so worth the investment IMO. I don't trust smartphone wallets.

    I think smartphone wallets are OK for small day to day transactions but I agree that if you're a high-roller and you're depositing and withdrawing thousands of dollars at a time then you're better off using a Trezor or a KeepKey.

    you don't just need to beware of downloading a wallet, you also need to worry that a hacked version will automatically update on your phone. app developers have a special key that allows them to update their apps, these updates are often then pushed to your ipad, iphone or android as an automatic update. if someone were to somehow get their hands of the update key for brd or samurai wallet, they could theoretically update the wallet on your phone so that it sent all your bitcoin to their wallet. i think for this reason it is always safer to keep smaller amounts on your phone, even if you trust the developers.
