Bitcoin gambling becoming more popular in Australia

    Australia has had a checkered past when it comes to gambling with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum or Monero. A popular Brisbane based and fully licensed bookmaker called Neds were forced to close down their bitcoin betting operations when regulators stepped in. New stricter licensing regulations also forced out crypto friendly poker room BetOnline this year. Despite this, it appears that cryptocurrency sports betting is on the rise in Australia according to this article which states that Melbourne Cup punters in Australia are increasingly using bitcoin to wager on horse racing. Aussies are also betting on the Australian Football League (AFL) and the National Rugby League (NRL) at popular cryptocurrency bookies that accept Australian citizens.

    I'm Australian and I can testify to this. The lack of in-play betting at bookies has driven a lot of punters to crypto sports betting sites. The fact that PokerStars, PartyPoker and Americas Cardroom poker rooms are no longer available is Australia means that tens of thousands of online poker players here have had no choice but to start playing at crypto poker sites. The net results of this is great for bitcoin because it had forced many Australians to learn how to use bitcoin. It has been bad for Australia because non of these offshore crypto gambling sites pay taxes in Australia so the money is leaking from the economy.

    Great point, how much money has the United States lost over the past couple of decades in lost taxes because of their stupid war on online gambling. The country's infrastructure is crumbling and yet they lose hundreds of billions by trying to prohibit sportsbooks and poker rooms.

    I don't think any crypto-only bookies or poker rooms sites have blocked Aussies. Seals With Clubs, Nitrogen, CloudBet and BetCoin are all still available down under.

    One of the reasons that cryptocurrency casinos and poker rooms are popular in Australia is that the Australian government has made both online poker and casino games illegal. None of the major sportsbooks in Australia like SportsBet or Ladbrokes are not allowed to offer Texas Hold'em, slots or blackjack to their citizens.
